Cladding Study Performance Monitoring

The project on Cladding Studies was proposed by Technology, Research, Development and Demonstration and funded by the Accommodation Branch. The objective of this study was to provide guidance for future design, construction, and maintenance of exterior cladding systems which will lead to improved performance and reduced operating costs.
Fir the 1990/91 fiscal year, Public Works Canada (PWC) was the custodian of over 2835 Administrative buildings as well as 2,000 non-office facilities across Canada which comprise over 4.8 million square meters of floor area. PWC is currently reviewing the performance and durability of the exterior wall cladding systems of its commercial and institutional buildings. This review has been initiated in response to the general trend of increasing costs of maintenance of existing exterior wall assemblies on large buildings as well as the increased awareness of the effect the wall envelope quality has on indoor comfort and air handling problems.
